ABSTRACT

Treating different diseases with the same method is a unique original thinking in Chinese medicine, which embodies the spirit of treatment based on syndrome differentiation. We briefly reviewed the origin and development of this concept. We also reviewed that thinking of combination of disease and syndrome is its premise and foundation. We put forward the conditionality of diseases in treating different diseases with the same method by cutting-in modern biological basic researches, that is to say, one kind specific diseases or disease of one specific system. We emphasized the importance of diseases conditionality in treating different diseases with the same method, which was of great significance in studies on combination of disease and syndrome, correspondence of prescription and syndrome, and modern biological basic researches of treating different diseases with the same method.

ABSTRACT

The connotation of integrative medicine was quoted and the formation of integrative medicine explained, mainly covering the following points: its philosophical and cultural bases, its formation being the request of the epoch, integrative medicine in line with the developing tendency of modem medicine, integrative medicine being an important orientation for the development of traditional medicine. Comprehensive concepts should be persisted in developing integrative medicine, including persisting in complex methodologies of medical systems, multiple disciplinary cross and integrative studies, and the combination of experimental and clinical studies. The development of integrative medicine plays an important promoting role in developing modem medicine and traditional medicine.

ABSTRACT

<p><b>AIM</b>To study the expression and effect of TLR4 and NFkappaB protein in hippocampus neuron in rats exposed to chronic hypoxic hypercapnia.</p><p><b>METHODS</b>The disorder of learning-memory in pulmonary hypertension rat model was reproduced by chronic hypoxic hypercapnia. Thirty rats were randomly divided into three groups: normal control group, hypoxic hypercapnia 2-week and 4-week group. The number of apoptosis neurons in hippocampus CA1/3 was counted by TUNEL method. Activity of TLR4 and NFkappaB in hippocampus CA1/3 was detected by using SP immunocytochemical technique.</p><p><b>RESULTS</b>The expression of TLR4 protein in hippocampus CA1/3 in group 2HH( CA1: 0.1275 +/- 0.0242, CA3: 0.1156 +/- 0.0376) and 4HH (CA1: 0.1522 +/- 0.0187, CA3: 0.1427 +/- 0.0453) were significantly higher than those in the NC group (P < 0.05, P < 0.01). The positive expression of NFkappaB were showed in cell nucleus in group 2HH (CA1: 0.1326 +/- 0.0324, CA3: 0.1301 +/- 0.0112) and group 4HH (CA1: 0.1612 +/- 0.0428, CA3: 0.1578 +/- 0.0365), and significantly higher than those in the NC group (P < 0.05, P < 0.01). The apoptosis of neural cells in hippocampus CA1/3 gradually increased with the time of exposure, and reached peak at 4 weeks (P < 0.01 vs NC group).</p><p><b>CONCLUSION</b>The activation of TLR4 and NFkappaB may play an important role in the apoptosis of hippocampus neural cells in rat exposed to chronic hypoxic hypercapnia.</p>

ABSTRACT

<p><b>AIM</b>To study the dynamic and long-lasting expression of thrombin receptor after acute intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) in rats.</p><p><b>METHODS</b>36 rats were randomly divided into 6 groups (n = 6): Normal group and ICH model groups at 6 hours, 24 hours, 3 days, 7 days and 14 days. ICH models were produced with the induction of collagenase type VII-S. Immunohistochemical method was used to detect PAR-1 protein and RT-PCR technique was used to detect PAR-1mRNA in brain tissue around the haematoma in different groups.</p><p><b>RESULTS</b>PAR-1 protein and mRNA were mild positive in normal group. In model groups, intensity of PAR-1 expression started to enhance at 6 hours, and enhanced more at 24 hours. PAR-1 expression reached the peak at 3 days and began to descend. At 7 days the descent was obvious and there was further descent at 14 days. At each time point, the PAR-1 protein positive cell number and PAR-1mRNA absorbance ratio in ICH model groups were significantly higher than those in normal group (P < 0.05 or P < 0.01). In addition, PAR-1 proteins were obviously expressed in vivo in brain capillary endothelial cell.</p><p><b>CONCLUSION</b>Functional PAR-1 exists in brain capillary endothelial cells. Activation of PAR-1 after ICH due to the stimulation of thrombin is not only the initiating agent of cerebral edema after ICH, but also participates the development of cerebral edema.</p>

ABSTRACT

<p><b>AIM</b>To study the functional activity of K(cA) on human mesenteric artery smooth muscle cells (SMC) from essential hypertension (EH) patients.</p><p><b>METHODS</b>Patch clamp technique with Inside-out mode was used for recording channel activity.</p><p><b>RESULTS</b>(1) K(CA) from human mesenteric artery SMC was voltage dependent. Single channel conductance was 191.4 pS and 197.7 pS in EH group and normal group respectively. The channel activity was blocked by TEA in cytoplastic side. (2) With the increasing of Ca2+ concentration in the bath solution (fron 0 to 10(-8), 10(-7), 5 x 10(-7), 10(-6) mol/L), the K(Ca) channel open probability (Po) of two groups were increased, Po of EH group increased from 0.016 to 0.023, 0.031, 0.0153, 0.094, Po of normal group increased from 0.004 to 0.023, 0.041, 0.072, 0.184. The mean open time lengthened and the mean close time shortened. (3) Po of K(Ca) of EH group was higher than that of normal group when Ca2+ concentration was 0, but it was equal with or lower than normal group at the other Ca2+ concentrations.</p><p><b>CONCLUSION</b>K(Ca) of mesenteric artery SMC from EH group has a lower Ca2+ sensitivity than that of normal person. This might be an active factor for the onset of EH.</p>

ABSTRACT

<p><b>AIM</b>To explore the effect of chronic hypoxic hypercapnia on learning-memory and the possible mechanisms involved.</p><p><b>METHODS</b>Fifty-eight male SD rats were randomly divided into three groups: Normal control group (NC, n=18), 2-week (2HH, n=18), and 4-week hypoxic hypercapnia (4HH, n=20) group. The rats, spatial learning-memory tasks were assessed by the Morris water maze. The expression of NMDAR1mRNA was determined by hybridization in situ.</p><p><b>RESULTS</b>Compared with NC group, rats exposed to chronic hypoxic hypercapnia displayed significant impairment in their performance assessed by two measures: mean escape latencies (2HH: 38.59 +/- 8.35 s, 4HH: 60.59 +/- 17.28 s) and swim path distances(2HH: 9893.45 +/- 1958.16 mm, 4HH: 18077.57 +/- 6878.85 mm). The expression level of NMDAR1mRNA in the hippocampus and cortex were lower than those in the NC group, especially, the NMDAR1mRNA expression of hippocampus CA1 in 4HH decreased by 21.4% (P < 0.01).</p><p><b>CONCLUSION</b>Chronic hypoxic hypercapnia could impair the rat spatial learning-memory and the decrease in expression of NMDAR1mRNA might be involved in.</p>

The PAR-1 protein positive cell number and PAR-1mRNA absorbance ratio in NMC II group were significantly lower than those in ICH model group (P < 0.05 or P < 0.01).</p><p><b>CONCLUSION</b>After ICH, PAR-1 is continuously activated because of the simulation of thrombin. Function of thrombin after ICH maybe mediated by PAR-1; NMC II may inhibit the expression of PAR-1. This may be one of the main therapeutics mechanisms of NMC II.</p>

ABSTRACT

<p><b>OBJECTIVE</b>To observe the therapeutic effect of Qingling Dingxuan Decoction (QDD) on vertigo caused by insufficient blood-supply of ventebrobasilar artery (IBVA).</p><p><b>METHODS</b>Thirty-nine patients were divided into the flunarizine group (n=19) and the QDD group (n=20) treated with respective medicine on the base of routine treatment with Chinese and Western medicine. The clinical efficacy and recurrent rate were observed and compared.</p><p><b>RESULTS</b>Compared with those in the flunarizine group, clinical curative effect was better, recurrent rate lower, symptom score higher, hemorheological parameters and transcranial doppler indexes were improved more significant in the QDD group (P < 0.01 or P < 0.05).</p><p><b>CONCLUSION</b>QDD had obvious therapeutic effect on IBVA. Improvement of microcirculation and reduction of blood viscosity may be one of the therapeutical mechanisms.</p>
